Look at your commute as an opportunity to better yourself so that tomorrow you will be even more capable and knowledgeable than you are today.
Also, you can leverage modern technology to “beat traffic” and get to work faster.
How to Get the Most Out of Audiobooks During Your Commute
Here are some resources that make it easy to learn by listening to audiobooks during your commute:
- Audible (audiobooks)
- Blinkist (has very brief audio summaries of books)
- Simply Audiobooks (the “Netflix” of audiobooks)
In addition to listening to audiobooks, you can also listen to Kindle books during your commute. Simply download the Kindle app to your mobile device and then go into the settings and set up “text to speech” so you can have the app read the book to you during your commute.
As an example, on an iPhone or iPad, you can take the following steps to set up “text to speech” so you can have your device read a Kindle book to you:
- Go to Settings, General, Accessibility, Speech
- Then turn on “Speak Screen” and change the speed based on your preference.
If you want to make as much learning progress as possible during your commute, note that you can usually change the speed at which an audiobook is read to you (e.g., with the Audible app, Blinkist, the Kindle app, etc.). For example, if you change the speed to 2X, (1) you can listen to twice as much content during your commute or (2) you could listen to audiobooks during only half of your commute and still make the same amount of progress.
How to Get to Work Faster
Consider downloading the app “Waze” which can help you avoid traffic. Waze redirects your route based on current traffic (e.g., to help you avoid a road that has a bad accident). It also can give you a heads up regarding where police are located along the way as well as various road hazards.
Give Waze a try a couple of time this week and see how much time it can save you.
